Words of Praise

After such hard work, these students deserve a little praise!

When you leave a comment, please be sure to indicate who the comment is for by including their name. If you'd like to get in touch with a particular student, you are more than welcome to email me and I will pass your information along to them. It is up to the individual student as to whether or not they choose to respond.

We'd love to hear what you think of our choices!

For Daniel - 'The Distance' by CAKE,

I agree with what you said about choosing a song with more meat on the bones. I found it very hard, especially in my documented to find anything on my artist. Also, for the analysis I found things to be difficult because my song wasnt more then 4 verses and the chorus. My song was short so I really couldnt analyze it all that well. I wish that I could go back and change my song but we both made the best of the songs we chose.

I wanted to comment and give praise on Fred's work because I feel as though our reasoning and ideas on english101 are most comparable to each other. I love the band Jack's Mannequin and I am so glad someone else understands and appreciates them just as I do. I believe the singer of the band, Andrew, to have such motivational lyrics. In fact, when I heard this song a couple months ago I felt empowered. Like Fred, I don't feel as strong of a writer when it comes to English essays. However we both have similar views that by coming to class the work definitely paid off. And who would have known we had such a great time in class! Good job Fred on your essay! And great job everyone on a wonderful semester!

For Gabby - "Crazy" by Patsy Cline

I think it's great that you found a song that you were able to stick with throughout the entire semester and were not sick of it at the end. I agree with you, that songs get old really fast and your tired of them by the end of the week pretty much. Any song that brings you closer to the ones you love is a great song and I hope that it stays great.

“Crazy” by Pasty Cline

I am going to second the call for having someone else proof read your work. I still can't believe some of the stupid mistakes that I passed right over before having someone else read my paper. Simple things like actually forgetting to finish a paragraph, it just ended mid sentence. It did not make me look good.

I wanted to give you some praise for what you wrote. Im glad to read that you wrote about a song that brings back memorys with your loved ones. Writing about something that you can connect to with strong emotion defiantly makes the writing alot easier and I know it helped you out and you did great on your works!Ive never heard that song but Im glad you chose one that makes you happy and can bring jow to yourself when you hear it. Your mom should be proud!!

"Ordinary People" by John Legend

Sallyn, It seems as though you enjoyed writing about your choice of song. I also enjoyed the anaylsis essay the most. It definitly was a way to find out where our songs really came from and what the meant to the artist.

I love the song "Let it be" by the Beatles. It's a great song to write about and I am sure you did not have any problems gathering information on the group. I also love your reasons for choosing it. This was a wonderful class and hope to see all of you in EN102!

For Mustafa

Your choice of music (hip-hop) and my choice (country) are extremely different. We may not agree on the type of music, but we agree on the meaning of the songs. It must have been difficult for you to write about your DIS. Truly it held a powerful and sentimental meaning to you personally. It took courage for you to be able to write about this song, as it held such emotions for you. You are to be admired for choosing this. I too, lost my Mom at a young age, and I know this must have been very difficult. So, even though we are apart in ages and in music, I greatly appreciate that you chose this song. Tupac certainly can put his true thoughts to paper and express them so well. As far as your choice, your Mom must be proud!

It's great that we can relate to songs to comfort us and encourage us to move on. Those memories will live on forever, and your feelings for your Mom will as well.

For Taiyo - "C.R.E.A.M." by Wu-Tang Clan

When I saw the artist Wu-Tang Clan I knew I had to comment on it. Wu-Tang is one of my favorite artists of all-time, so I highly respect your choice. I understand about not knowing enough about your artist. Even though I picked Tupac I still had some trouble writing some of the papers. C.R.E.A.M. is one of my top 5 songs and showcases Wu-tang's lyrics in its rawest form. It's definitely a hip-hop classic, to me at least. Time management was also a HUGE problem for me when writing most of the assignments. I learned that procrastination is not good to do on a research project. Anyway, great song choice and much success to you in the future!

For Katie:

I 100% agree with your advice on picking the first song that pops into your head. If you pick one that doesn’t really mean that much to you just because you think you could find more research on a particular artist, you’re going to really dislike the writing process during the semester. I’m glad you chose “Love Story.” It’s such a great song and I’m sure you had fun learning more about Taylor. She’s such an amazing song writer.

For Micah-

I agree with you almost entirly word for word. The narrative was the most enjoyable for me to write and I feel as though we may have encountered similar problems staying engaged with our work. I forgot all about what professor DiFabio said regarding our initial DIS song and chosing one of which we had a vivid memory upon hearing it for the first time. Aside from the sentimental vaulue I'm sure your DIS holds for you, I feel as though you really couldnt have picked a better song, because of the sheer amount of information and sources availble relating to the Beatles. I'll be sure to pay atention to details such as that if I ever do a simlar assignment in the future.

I strongly agree with what Katie said. I had litlle difficulty making my choice of song and the artist. To be able to write about My Dis meant that the song must be personal to me. And Don moen had tobe the one.The song i choosed is long and the lyrics is clear. i understood it from the very time i listened to it and was in for it.athis song has lived in me for so long and i need not listen to it before i could sing.I just love it and i did write much about it in all the essays.

For Grace
Your choice of song appeals to me. I agree with you that the song ministers to your heart. It has the same effect on me. I admire your consistency in the choice of your songs which actually portrays your faith. Please keep it up and never wavers. I will give you the same advice that Paul gave to Timothy, stand firm in your faith and do not let your youth be despised. Kudos.

For Kandi -
"Off The Wall" by Michael Jackson

I can definitely relate to your experience in choosing a DIS. When you said that so many songs came rushing all at once, I remember feeling the same way at the start of the semester. Anyways I really like this song and am glad that you got to enjoy it, while furthering your skills as a writer. Good luck in your future English classes if you ever take any more.

Hi Robert,
I understand that both of us had the same experience in the selection of our songs, as it concerns the actual song to pick that relates to personal impact and experience from the barrage of many songs and artists available. However, I like and enjoyed your choice. I discovered and understand the reason underlying the choice. The song also appealed to me with its positive message. Thanks for sharing it with the class.
